In the spirit of a traditional carnival, there will be a lot going on under the ‘big top’ so to speak.  Carnival games, fortune telling and treats will be available throughout the evening.   Fabulous door prizes from local establishments will be given away towards the end of the night.  The evening will feature musical performances from Chris McGarry, Edith Makes a Paper Chain, and Bonnie & the Beard.  Accompanying the music will also be performances by the ladies of Miraas Aerial and Burlesque as It Was; both of which feature some of our own talented LUPEC ladies!

Frills & Follies - coming up September 24th at 7 pm!

Guests are encouraged to dress in their finest depression-era carnival garb in order to get into the spirit of the fun as well.  Proceeds from the entire evening will be donated to benefit Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains.

Why do you love being a LUPEC Denver girl?
I love the comings together of educated, smart, and vivid women who all bring something different to contribute to the table.  LUPEC women are “doers” and are truly living their lives.  I love drinking.  I love knowing I get one good party a month.  The inclusiveness, instant friendship, and the idea of community is easily offered by LUPEC.  With the business of life, LUPEC offers a way for me to contribute to good in our society.

What’s your favorite cocktail?
Grape Kool-aid martini, it tastes like my childhood.

What’s you favorite Denver bar?
Jonesy’s and Stueben’s.

If you could be a piece of barware, what would you be?
A cocktail parasol.

What’s your favorite garnish?
Cherries and fancy stuffed olives.

What’s your recipe?

Gin and Sin
Glassware: Cocktail
Ingredients:

• 1 ½ oz. Gin
• 1 oz. Orange Juice
• 1 oz. Lemon Juice
• ½ tsp Grenadine syrup

To Serve: In a shaker half-filled with ice cubes, combine all of the ingredients. Shake well. Strain into a cocktail glass.

How long have you been in LUPEC Denver?
I was one of the founding members, and rejoined as a LUPEC Denver Liaison six months ago.

Why do you love being a LUPEC Denver girl?
I love that there’s an underlying subversiveness and commitment to social justice causes affecting women and children.

What’s your favorite cocktail?
If it has whiskey in it, or some relative to whiskey, I’m all in!

What’s you favorite Denver bar?
I’ve a not-so-secret penchant for all things dive bar with live music, so I love The Lion’s Liar and El Chapultapec.

If you could be a piece of barware, what would you be?
I would be a highball glass because it’s classic, simple, and often holds whiskey.

What’s your favorite garnish?
I love the shape of a curled lemon or orange peel.  There’s something simply seductive about it.

What are you reading/watching/listening to?
I read/watch/listen to a lot, but am always partial to the KEXP, This American Life, and Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me podcasts.  I’ve a pile of books waiting to be read ranging from Kozol to Tolstoy.  And I regularly watch “The PBS Newshour” just to hear Kwame Holman’s mellifluous voice.

What’s your recipe?

Canadian Cherry
Glassware: Cocktail
Ingredients:

• 1½ oz Canadian whiskey
• ½ oz Peter Heering or Cherry Karise
• ¼ oz lemon juice
• ¼ oz orange juice

To serve: Shake ingredients with ice. Strain into prechilled sugar-frosted cocktail glass. Glass rim may be moistened with cherry liqueur before dipping into sugar.

We’ll be hanging out from 4pm-7pm, enjoying some delicious cocktails and yummy snacks.

Meeting Theme: Liquid Romance

Why did you choose this theme?
Upon requesting Feb., I immediately turned to love, roses, kisses, cupids, and valentines.  Browsing through my cocktail books I kept stumbling across cocktails named after movie love stories.

What were the cocktails you served?
Titanic – Quite a striking drink!  Blue lights in the bottom, blue jewels (“the heart of the ocean”), and Titanic and iceberg ice cubes were used.

Moulin Rouge – Loved the inclusion of macadamia nut liqueur and honey vodka together.

From Here to Eternity (Vanilla Passion) –  I infused my own vanilla vodka.

Lolita – Whoa! (Joey Lawrence style)

Blue Lagoon – The girls loved the blue colored jello I used to rim the glasses!

Romeo and Juliet – even Pomeranian liked it, and she doesn’t like rum!

Romeo and Juliet
1 oz. light rum
1 oz. dark rum
1 oz. chocolate rum (I used chocolate syrup, the kind you put in coffee, not Hershey’s)
3 oz. cola

and we raised $488 from the photo booth, corsages, and special prom cocktail sales.

In addition to the mind boggling number of donations (we filled an entire Honda Element!), we pulled off our first Prom inspired fashion show! The Vamp brought together an amazing group of local designers and, with the help of our BarBelles, we strutted our stuff in some truly fabulous finery!

So many thanks to Slenderette, D’Lola, James Etc, Heartbreaker Hairpieces, Incroyables by Melissa, LRE Couture, and So Whimsy for donating their incredible talents to our cause!

We had a fantastic time at Beauty Bar, who were gracious enough to donate $1 from every Prom cocktail sold and helped us pull off an wonderful evening. We rocked out to DJ Alisha and DJ Ginger Perry who kept the dance floor packed all night!

All in all, Prom Redux was a complete success and we’re already planning for next year’s event! Thank you to everyone who made this evening possible and, more importantly, made prom happen for so many students in the Adams 12 school district!

Meeting Theme: We heart LUPEC!

Beautiful beverage in beautiful glassware!

Why did you choose this theme?
As two of the original founding members of LUPEC Denver, we thought it was only appropriate to center our meeting around our seventh anniversary and our love of LUPEC!

What were the cocktails you served?
The classic cocktails we selected celebrated the lovely ladies that make this group great!
All the cocktails were legitimately classic – Grasshopper discovered two of the recipes in a cocktail book that was originally published in 1935 and this printing is from 1961. The Anniversary cocktail was especially strong and a few of the members found that adding a little lemon-flavored sparkling water complimented the drink nicely. The Love cocktail didn’t go over that well, but was certainly pretty! We ended the meeting with a pink champagne toast to celebrate our LUPEC-iversary and the last meeting of our delightful British import – Red Peril!

What food was served/brought?
The food consisted of Grasshopper’s homemade strawberry shortcake, a roasted grapefruit fruit salad, fancy cheeses, veggies, deviled eggs (of course!), Valentine’s candy and red velvet heart-shaped whoopie pies!

Anything else you’d like to say about your meeting?
Saying goodbye to LUPEC members is always hard. It’s been amazing having a little British flavor and cocktail culture in the mix for the past year. We can’t wait for our LUPEC Denver field trip to visit Red Peril in London! Up your bum!

LUPEC Denver has been an incredible part of both our lives for the past seven years. It was a pleasure to take the time to celebrate all the amazing things we have accomplished as a group and the incredible bonds that have been formed. We can’t wait to see what the future will bring for LUPEC Denver as we evolve and grow!

Recipe, please!

Anniversary Cocktail
1 1/2 oz brandy
1 1/2 oz gin
splash of bitters
Shake with ice; strain into chilled cocktail glass

Ladies’ Cocktail
1 3/4 oz whiskey
1/2 t absinthe
1/2 t anisette
2 dashes bitters
Stir with ice and strain into cocktail glass; serve with piece of pineapple

Love Cocktail
2 oz sloe gin
1 egg white
1/2 t lemon juice
1/2 t raspberry juice
Shake with ice; strain into cocktail glass

Strawberry Shortcakes:

This is the Cook’s Illustrated’s strawberry shortcake recipe – full of deliciousness!

Shortcakes:

2     cups all-purpose flour
1/2  teaspoon  table salt
1     tablespoon  baking powder
3     tablespoons  granulated sugar
1     stick  unsalted butter (8 tablespoons), cut in half the long way and then each
1     egg, beaten
1/2  cup  half-and-half
1     tablespoon  half-and-half
1     egg white, lightly beaten
2     tablespoons  granulated sugar for sprinkling

Adjust an oven rack to the lower middle position and preheat oven to 425 degrees. Mix flour, salt, baking powder, and 3 tablespoons sugar in a food processor.  Add the butter to the food processor and pulse until it’s mixed in and resembles coarse meal, fifteen to twenty 1-second pulses.

Mix the beaten egg with the half-and-half; pour it into the flour mixture. Toss with a fork until large clumps form. Turn the mixture onto a well-floured work surface and lightly knead until it comes together.

Pat the dough into 9- by 6-inch rectangle, 3/4 inch thick. Flour a biscuit cutter in your choice of size; cut dough rounds. Place 1 inch apart on small baking sheet; brush the dough tops with egg white and sprinkle with remaining sugar. (Can be covered and refrigerated up to 2 hours before baking.) Bake until golden brown, 12 to 14 minutes. Place baking sheet on wire rack; cool cakes until warm, about 10 minutes.

Top with strawberries (about two pounds, hulled and chopped and macerated with a couple of tablespoons of sugar for a while) and whipped cream (about a pint of heavy cream whipped with a splash of vanilla and a tablespoon or so of sugar).

Why do you love being a LUPEC Denver girl?
I love being able to give something back to the community through our charity events in really fun, fabulous, and creative ways.  I also love the camaraderie of enjoying cocktails with a group of interesting and dynamic women who share some of the same ideals that I do.

What’s your favorite cocktail?
The Dirty Gin Martini!  It’s a delicious drink and snack all in one!

What’s you favorite Denver bar?
Wow, that’s a tough one!  I don’t think I have just one favorite bar, or maybe I haven’t found the perfect one yet.  My ideal bar would be comfortable, casual, friendly, have a nice shaded patio, serve delicious creative cocktails and have a good beer selection, and have great specials.  And serve yummy snacks too!

If you could be a piece of barware, what would you be?
Hmm… I’m gonna have to say a swizzle stick, so I can stir things up!

What’s your favorite garnish?
Bleu cheese stuffed olives!

What are you reading/watching/listening to?
I’ve really been digging the band, the xx, lately.

Glassware: Cocktail
Ingredients:

• 1 oz. Vodka
• 1 oz. Cointreau Orange Liqueur (or Triple Sec)
• ½ oz. Lemon Juice

To Serve:  Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
